Troop History

The call to start a troop in the Kansas City, Kansas Arch-Diocese came to Kim Grandon as early as 2012. Oh how we wish we could be more like Mary and say yes immediately!  Kim understood that if she took this on, it would have to be done right and that would take work – a lot of work.  Still, with a new baby in tow, three other young ones at home and one who had just spread her wings into the world, Kim stepped out in faith.  When selecting the Troop number, Kim chose the chapter and verse of her favorite scripture that reveals to us how to raise our children.  Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go and he will not depart from it.”  Oh, how perfect this program of American Heritage Girls will be for our young Catholic girls!

Presenting the DVD that introduces new parents to the purpose and mission of the American Heritage Girls was first.  Patiently, Kim waited for others to accept their call and step forward to form a Board, which is mandatory to begin a Troop.  Monsignor Charles excitedly chartered the Troop as soon as the Board positions were filled.  Meetings began soon after that.

Troop 2206 was placed in God’s hands constantly seeking His will for the Troop.  There has been slow, but steady, growth and the many blessings cannot be counted.  The girls are learning that giving selflessly and without reward is, in itself, the greatest reward.

Children below 5th grade cannot attend Camp Kateri Tekakwitha at Prairie Star. However, as an American Heritage Girl, ALL our girls, throughout the entire Arch-Diocese, get to attend Camp Americana at Prairie Star, if they choose.  Our Catholic camp begins with the rosary and ends with mass. In between, the girls ride horses, learn archery, go canoeing and this year they got to slide down Wet Willy, the most fun lake water slide in the world!  Kim dedicates herself to months of planning so every girl has the time of her life.

Now into our third year, Troop 2206 is partnering with Omega Phi Alpha ,a sorority, whose primary focus is to serve others.  It only makes sense to have the two partner to meet the needs of many around them.  This exposure will help our AHG girls continue to grow in the knowledge that your beauty on the outside is because of what you are inside.

Our creed, as an American Heritage Girl I promise to be: Compassionate, Helpful, Honest, Loyal, Perseverant, Pure, Resourceful, Respectful, Responsible and Reverent and to that end we will always aspire.

National History

The American Heritage Girls was founded in 1995 by Patti Garibay and other parents from West Chester, Ohio to form a Christian alternative to the Girl Scouts after allowing the substitution of another word for "God" in GS promise and supposedly banned prayer at meetings. The organization started with 100 girls.

American Heritage Girls is the premier national character development organization for girls ages 5-18 that embraces Christian values and encourages family involvement.  American Heritage Girls is not just a fun program; it's a ministry that is developed through the church.

The American Heritage Girls is growing at such a rapid pace, it’s in over-drive to keep up with charters and expansion.  This year commemorates 20 years and growing!
